About our Sunday School Classes - Available for All Ages
Calvary Church is fortunate to have a staff of
talented men and women who teach Sunday School with love and care to
help others know and love God. Classes meet from 9:30 to 10:20 every
Sunday from September through June. Visitors are always welcome!
Toddlers and Preschool
- Children ages two through five meet in the Edith Burke Room. Each
Sunday they hear a story from the Bible and learn through related
songs, prayers, activities, and crafts. Parents are welcome to stay
until children are comfortable on their own in the classroom.
Lower Elementary and Upper
Elementary - New Rotation Learning Curriculum
The Lower Elementary Class (Gr. K -
2) and the Upper Elementary Class (Gr. 3 - 5) will be using a
rotational learning curriculum this year. Starting this Fall with
"The Ten Commandments", the
classes will have a common theme for a 4 - 6 week session and each
week the children will rotation through different activity stations
to explore the theme. Activity stations include art, music,
storytelling, science, cooking, video and games. Each week will
begin with a gathering time and each class will be led by a
shepherd, to guide them through the rotations.
Youth - Both middle school
and high school youth meet together with leaders in the Youth Room. A
number of different experiences are planned for the youth to explore
their faith and connection with worship and current issues. The students
help choose the topics of study.
Adults - Adults
of all ages meet in the Parlor. Class topics are chosen by the
group.
Junior Church and Infant/Toddler Space
All children and adults attend worship
together in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings. After a time of
prayer, song, and Bible readings, children gather at the front of
the sanctuary with the pastor and worship leaders for a special
children's time.
After the children's message, children ages 3-10 are
invited to attend Junior Church in the Milne Room to continue the
worship experience. The adult leaders lead the children through an
age-appropriate worship service with singing, bible story, offering
and prayer. The time is completed with related activities and
crafts. A team of adults rotates leadership for Junior Church.
(Children in grades four and up are encouraged to stay in the
sanctuary with their parents.)
Children under age three who need some wiggle time during the
service can come with a parent to the Upper Room, which contains
infant/toddler toys, a changing table, and a sofa. The Upper Room
has a window into the sanctuary, allowing parents to hear the
service. The Edith Burke Room is also open for parents and children.
Children's Choir
The children's choir is open to all children
ages 4 and above. The choir meets for rehearsals once a week for
half an hour and performs during the Sunday worship service once
each month.
Youth Group
Children in Grades 6 - 12 are invited to join
in our growing Youth Group. This group meets twice per month,
generally on Sunday evening, offering a wide variety of outings and
activities. Please contact Susan Stewart at the church or at
coordinator@calvaryarlington.org for more details and specific
schedule. Please also visit the Youth
Group
page.
Book Club
The Book Club meets every 1-2 months to review and discuss selected
books in the church Parlor. Some of the books reviewed include The
Book Thief,
The Secret Life of Bees, The Shack,
Three Cups of Tea, and The Red Tent. We recently
finished Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett, and The Gurnsey
Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schaffer and Annie
Barrows. Our book for September 2009 is Pride and Prejudice,
by Jane Austen. All are welcome and we have lots of good
discussion and fun -- please join us!
Mid-Week Adult Education
Opportunities
Each year, adult studies are offered by the Pastor
and other leaders at Calvary Church.
A 5 week study during Lent this year was led by Rev. Christine
Elliott. The group read and discussed The Power of Forgiveness,
and it was a deep experience with rich discussions.
If you have an idea for the next study topic (or
would like to lead one!) please see Rev. Christine Elliott or Alexx
Wood.
